Back Burner Press

My children have encouraged me to start my own press in order to publish their published father's unpublished works. I am currently at work on two books, to be available shortly through lulu.com. I will be posting much more about these books once production is complete.

The first is The Battle of Plum Run, a profusely illustrated companion to River Run Red, my account of the Fort Pillow Massacre in the American Civil War that was published by Viking Penguin. I think it can stand on its own, however, as a cautionary tale about one of the most savage theatres of the Civil War: the Upper Mississippi.

The second is A Sidekick Christmas, a sort of children's book for adults that I wrote and illustrated around my 60th birthday. It concerns an annual Christmas convergence of six of the old sidekicks of the Old West, who gather to exchange gifts, complain about their bosses, and generally let their hair down. It will come with a recording of a reading by the great character actor Barry Corbin of Lonesome Dove and No Country for Old Men fame, accompanied by selections of Christmas music.
